Dec 1 -- Another powerful
earthquake may occur in the Kurile Islands region in the next two-three
months, scientists at the Sakhalin Sea Geology and Geophysics Institute
suppose, referring to the analysis of the earthquakes in the Kuriles
for the past 50 years. After the disastrous 9.0-magnitude quake hit
Paramushir Island in 1952, the second powerful tremor was recorded 26
days later. According to scientists, the powerful underground tremor
was caused by seven-meter movement of a Pacific layer under the
mainland. The energy for the movement had accumulated for 100 years.
The seismic activity near Simushir Island does not subside. Ten quakes
were recorded there over the past 24 hours, the Emergencies Ministry's
Sakhalin regional department reported. The magnitude of the tremors
exceeded 4.0 on the Richter scale, according to the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk
seismological station.

25-Researchers say Lake Tahoe
fault could deliver massive earthquake: A fault line beneath Lake Tahoe
could rupture at any time and unleash a massive earthquake that
triggers an underwater landslide and sends 30-foot waves crashing into
nearby parks, campgrounds, homes and marinas, researchers said. Such an
event along the West Tahoe Fault, the biggest of Lake Tahoe's three
geologic faults, could also send waves over a dam that regulates water
flow into the Truckee River, according to research presented last week
at a meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco. The
West Tahoe Fault, which skirts the lake's western shore and runs
through Fallen Leaf Lake and beyond to the south, is large enough to
deliver a temblor of magnitude 7 or higher, according to the
researchers. However, it's unclear when a large quake might strike. The
last big earthquake along the fault appears to have occurred between
4,000 and 6,000 years ago, and the fault appears to produce major
earthquakes every 5,000 to 7,000 years, according to the researchers.
"We're keeping an eye on it," said Michael Reichle, chief seismologist
at the California Geological Survey. "There are active faults near the
lake, under the lake and to the east in Nevada at the base of the
hills. We still don't know very much about all those faults.

February - Earthquakes 2006: A
major 7.0 earthquake occurred near the southern end of the East African
rift system. The East African rift system is a diffuse zone of crustal
extension that passes through eastern Africa from Djibouti and Eritrea
on the north to Malawi and Mozambique on the south and that constitutes
the boundary between the Africa plate on the west and the Somalia plate
on the east. At the earthquake's latitude, the Africa and Somalia
plates are spreading apart at a rate of several millimeters per year.
The largest earthquake to have occurred in the rift system since 1900
had a magnitude of about 7.6. Most earthquakes within the East African
rift system occur as the result of either normal faulting or
strike-slip faulting. A 5.7 quake struck east India; 4.6 in Montana;
300 tremors located near the Karymshy volcano on Kamchatka; 5.2 quake
