mainly attributed by the Caribbean plate boundary, situated just north
of Puerto Rico and just east of most of the Caribbean Islands. There
was a 4.5 quake in the area on the 9th. Government warns New Madrid quake would be "catastrophic" -
A Federal Emergency Management Agency report released Thursday said
"catastrophic" damage would result in eight states — Alabama, Arkansas,
Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee - home
to some 44 million people — if a large 7.7 earthquake happened along
the vast New Madrid Seismic Zone. FEMA believes a large New Madrid
quake would cause "the highest economic losses due to a natural
disaster in the United States." In Tennessee alone, it forecast
hundreds of collapsed bridges, tens of thousands of severely damaged
buildings and a half a million households without water. Transportation
systems and hospitals would be wrecked, and police and fire departments
impaired. California sensors misread Russian earthquake as local-
The computers registered quakes in Big Bear and Central California, but
they were really picking up waves from a magnitude 7.3 near Russia. "It
happens with a particular circumstance, when there's an earthquake
that's far away that's very deep. Our computer was briefly confused."
The real earthquake was a magnitude 7.3 temblor in the Sea of Okhotsk.
It occurred about 1 a.m. Pacific Standard Time, about 300 miles below
ground. Shortly after, sensors in the U.S. sent out alerts of a
magnitude 3.4 earthquake in Big Bear, a 3.8 quake in Central
California, and a 4.8 quake in southeastern Idaho. Small 2.2 Earthquake Strikes South-Central AR; Latest Of Six Small Quakes This Month-November 26th. Malvern,
AR (AHN) -The quake struck at 11:34 a.m. and registered as a magnitude
2.2 rated by the NEIC, according to the National Earthquake Information
Center. Its epicenter was about 5 miles north of Malvern and about 34
miles southwest of Little Rock. Although small earthquakes are common
across the United States, there have been several in the state this
month. On Saturday evening a 2.3 temblor hit central Arkansas about six
miles northeast of Hot Springs Village just before 6:30 p.m., according
to the U.S. Geological Survey. But emergency dispatchers in Garland
County reportedly did not receive any calls about the quake from area
residents. Another 2.3 quake struck the area on Sunday, according to
reports. There was also a 2.6 earthquake on Nov. 21 about 13 miles
northeast of Hot Springs Village, a Nov. 10 temblor registering 2.0
three miles northeast of Rockport, and an earlier Nov. 2 earthquake in
that area registering 2.7.CALIFORNIA -
Earthquake series continue across California. Four small earthquakes
struck Central and Southern California early Saturday, but there were
no reports of damage or injuries. A magnitude-4.1 quake hit the
Ridgecrest area of Kern County shortly before 1:15 p.m. The same area
had a 3.2-magnitude quake at 3am. Two earthquakes also struck the
Salinas Valley along the Central Coast. A magnitude-3.2 quake hit just
before 5 Saturday morning and a second quake of the same magnitude
followed two minutes later. The quakes were centered near the town of
Aromas and about 35 miles from San Jose. A 3.0-magnitude quake struck
the same area at about 10:30 Friday night. The latest temblor came
after an earthquake of magnitude 6.2 struck off California's northern
coast about 133 miles west of Eureka Thursday.

- Scientists say what appeared to be an earthquake in northeastern
Nevada was actually a seismograph picking up waves from an earlier
quake in the Arctic Ocean. A preliminary report from the U.S.
Geological Survey said a magnitude-4.2 temblor centered about 18 miles
west of North Fork shook Elko County at 3:07 a.m. Tuesday. Phases from
a magnitude-5.8 quake in the Arctic Ocean seven minutes earlier had
been wrongly interpreted by a seismograph as a local quake. The shaking
could not be felt in Nevada, but waves from a quake like the one in the
Arctic can be detected around the world. Summary: An earthquake measuring 8 points
on the MSK earthquake intensity scale hit the Osh region of Kyrgyzstan
at 21.53 on 5 October 2008. The epicenter of the quake was 220 km
south-east of Osh city, in the territory of Tajikistan. As of 6
October, 75 people are reported killed, 200 injured, 128 houses
destroyed and more than 70 per cent of infrastructure damaged in Nura
village with a population of 941 people in Alai district. TONGA -
A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 rocked a remote area of the
South Pacific Ocean east of the island nation of Tonga Sunday the 19th.
Buildings in the capital, Nuku'alofa, shook for about two minutes
during the quake.

Southwest China has been hit by 945 aftershocks since a
6.1-on-the-Richter-scale quake killed over 40 people in the region on
Saturday. The quake struck China's Sichuan Province on Saturday at 4:30
p.m. [8:30 a.m. GMT] with the epicenter about 50 km southeast of the
city of Panzhihua, killing at least 44 people and destroying 258,000
homes. Shortly afterwards, an aftershock measuring 5.6 on the Richter
scale, the most powerful of the aftershocks to hit the area, struck the
Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, in the northwest of the country.
China has been hit by 21 big quakes this year, and experts predict that
more could occur in the new future. CANADA-
A series of earthquakes have been shaking the West Coast of Vancouver
Island recently including one that struck off the coast of Tofino.
Scientists have recorded more than 100 small earthquakes in this
general area over the past couple weeks, but say that amount of
activity is not unusual. No damage has been recorded from any of the
quakes and none were strong enough to cause a tsunami. Although they
have yet to confirm the theory, scientists suspect the tremors are
being caused by the Explorer Ridge - an area where two oceanic plates
are located just off Vancouver Island and the movement of the plates
away from each other may have been caused by some magmatic activity
underneath the earth's crust. Natural Resources Canada rates the West
Coast of Vancouver Island as an area with a high likelihood of strong,
damaging earthquakes.

a small earthquake Wednesday in Eastern Arkansas started along a
mystery fault line - A small earthquake in Lee County Wednesday was a
RARITY for the region, and scientists say that it originated from a
fault which has not seen much activity in years. Two earthquakes struck
Northeast and Eastern Arkansas late Wednesday night, neither of them
causing any damage. The first was 2.6 on the Richter Scale. The second
occurred an hour later at 11:35 p.m. and was a 2.7 magnitude along the
New Madrid fault. The first earthquake in Lee County was both small and
uncommon and occurred along a fault line that has yet to found. The
evidence found in Lee County could not have been generated by the New
Madrid Seismic Zone. “This was a small earthquake, but it’s VERY
UNCOMMON to see events happening in this area. INDONESIA -
A powerful 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck at sea off the Indonesian
island of Java, triggering a tsunami warning which was lifted after an

earthquake rattled southern Peru on the 7th, startling residents in the
Andean country's second-largest city, Arequipa, who ran out of their
homes into the streets. It was recorded at a depth of 46 miles.
Witnesses said people refused to go back into their homes after the
quake, fearing they might collapse in an aftershock. Dirt tumbled onto
sections of Peru's coastal highway. GREECE: A
6.4 quake in the DODECANESE ISLANDS, GREECE. It struck near the Greek
island of Rhodes. The earthquake did not cause any major damage, but
residents and tourists fled their homes and hotels in panic. One woman
was killed when she slipped and fell as she tried to flee her home.
There have been multiple small aftershocks - the largest was 3.4
magnitude. Two quakes of 4.1 and 3.9 occurred a few hours before the
6.4 one. 5.2 Southern Qinghai, China5.5 Kermadec Islands Region5.5

earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale, the country's
meteorological agency said. Japan's weather agency said a strong
earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.1 has struck off the
northern Japanese coast. The Meteorological Agency said there was no
danger of a tsunami, or seismic waves, from the quake, which occurred
about 20 miles below the ocean's surface off the coast of Fukushima.
Magnitude 6.4 Earthquake Hits Fiji Region on Saturday, July 19. A large
7.0 earthquake has hit off the Japan coast 190 miles NE of Tokyo. No
reports of damage or fatalities have yet been reported. The Pacific
Tsunami Warning Center has not issued Pacific wide alert. However,
local surge or waves may have been created. A 5.3 mag. aftershock
occurred 8 minutes after the major event, on July 18. The Cascadia
Subduction Zone continues to show increased activity. Two more
large-moderate earthquakes measuring 5.6 and 5.2 magnitude occurred
just minutes ago. This followed two earlier quakes this afternoon
measuring 4.4 and 4.1 magnitude, on July 17.

Tuesday, June 3, 2008; noon local time, 171 aftershocks were monitored
in southwest China's quake zone. Only one of the tremors measured above
4.0 on the Richter scale while all the others measured below 3.9 in
magnitude. A total of 10,068 aftershocks have been detected in the
quake areas since May 12 when the 7.9-magnitude quake struck.
'Earthquake Clouds' - linear cloud formations appeared in China prior
to the Sichuan earthquake, and these types of clouds have been reported
recently in Northern California and Seattle. Now a truly extraordinary
series of these clouds has been photographed by pilots in Japan. These
formations may suggest that more earthquakes are coming - such
sightings have previously taken place prior to big quakes. Strange
'northern lights' - 30 minutes before the Sichuan earthquake in China.
Bizarre colorful (luminous/glowing) cloud phenomenon in the sky was
observed about 30 minutes before the May 12, 2008 Sichuan earthquake
took place. This was recorded in Tianshui, Gansu province ~450km
northeast of epicenter, by someone using a cell phone. Glowing clouds
10 minutes before the quake - This was recorded in Meixian, Shaanxi
province ~550km northeast of epicenter. The phenomenon was said to last
for about 1 min. Iceland - A strong earthquake measuring 6.1 hit
southern Iceland, 50km (30 miles) from the capital, Reykjavik. In the
town of Selfoss, near the epicenter, buildings were damaged and up to
20 people needed treatment for minor injuries. Residents in the capital
felt buildings shake and aftershocks were felt in the south-west of the
country. "It was quite a lot of shaking... It was quite a big one." The
earthquake lasted about eight seconds: "It was fairly noisy. It sounded
like thunder coming from the ground." The road between Reykjavik and
Selfoss has been closed due to damage. Authorities have advised
residents in the area to leave their homes because of the possibility
of aftershocks. Iceland, which has a population of about 300,000, is a
geologically unstable volcanic island in the north Atlantic. The
country had been expecting further quakes after a series of tremors in
the same area in 2000. South Korea - A 4.2-magnitude earthquake
occurred near Jeju Island, causing startled people to evacuate their
homes. It was ONE OF THE STRONGEST QUAKES EXPERIENCED IN 30 YEARS in
Jeju. With the number of earthquakes in the area growing recently, this
latest incident is causing people to worry about their safety. The
quake caused high-rise apartments in some regions to shake for about
five seconds, and some people walking on streets to stagger. A report
by the Geological Society of Korea in 2005 said that the Korean
Peninsula has frequent quakes every 400 to 500 years and that the
country was currently in one of those periods. There has been a 6.5
quake in GREECE. At least one person has been killed as the earthquake
rocked southern Greece, collapsing buildings and causing panic. Some 20
injuries were reported from falling roofs as the tremor - which had an
epicenter 200 kilometers (124 miles) west of Athens - struck near
Patras in the Peloponnese region. Experts have warned that aftershocks
are likely as the quake's epicenter was close to the ground's surface.
"The earthquake was terrifying. The duration was about 60 seconds...
Buildings have fallen or been damaged and roads have been destroyed."
The earthquake was ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL TO HIT GREECE IN MODERN
TIMES. A family of 10 is believed to be trapped in their collapsed home
near the epicenter. The tremor was distinctly felt in Athens, hundreds
of kilometers from the epicenter, while reports from the Ionian isles
and Ileia prefecture on the mainland of western Peloponnese, stated
that residents had fled their homes. Aftershocks so far - 4.6, 3.5,

A rift extending for about 15 kilometers has appeared on the surface of
the ground in five districts following the magnitude 7.2 earthquake
that struck Japan's Tohoku region on June 14, it has emerged. In the
Mochikorogashi district of Koromogawa-ku in Oshu, Iwate Prefecture, a
zigzag fault has appeared in the surface through two rice paddies, with
the land on the west side about 45 centimeters higher. Across four of
the five points, a rift extending for about 10 kilometers has appeared
along an old fault on the border between Iwate and Miyagi prefectures.
"There's a possibility that this fault caused the earthquake, but with
an earthquake of this size it wouldn't be unusual for a step of about 2
meters to appear on the surface. There is also a possibility that
another fault caused the earthquake and the effects of that caused this
rift to appear on the surface." IRAN -
four consecutive tremors measuring 3.2, 4.4, 3.2 and 3.2 shook Kerman
province, Southeastern Iran Friday night. The city of Jiroft on Friday
was hit at 19:26 hour’s local time (1456 GMT) for the first time and it
was struck on Saturday at 06:03 hour’s local time (0133 GMT) for the
last. The Office for Natural Disasters had informed people of the
likely quake, calling for preparations to deal with it. The four
consecutive tremors scared the people of the province who stayed
outdoors in the streets and parks overnight. INDIA-
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands were again jolted by three successive
tremors on Saturday, just a day after three other quakes shook the
islands. The latest was 6.3 at 6.26 p.m [there has been a 5.4 since
then] with the epicenter of the quake located 132 km south-west of Port
Blair, 35 km beneath the sea. Two earthquakes of moderate intensity
measuring 5.1 and 5.3 on the Richter scale shook the islands earlier at
8.56 a.m. and 10 a.m. respectively. No damage to property or loss of
life was reported. This was the 6th tremor felt since Friday after the
islands were hit by three earthquakes measuring 6.7, 6.1 and 6.6 on the
Richter scale. ISRAEL-
Israeli authorities warn hospitals to prepare for earthquake - A strong
earthquake could soon rock Lebanon and parts of Israel, authorities
said on Monday, urging health officials in northern Israel to make
preparations for such an event. "The probability of an earthquake of a
magnitude of up to six on the Richter scale, originating in Lebanon and
being felt in Israel has increased." Since February, ABNORMAL seismic
activity has been noted in southern Lebanon, which suffered some 500
minor earthquakes in a three-month period. "In May, the tremors have
become more intense and were felt in northern Israel. Should an
earthquake of such magnitude hit northern Israel it may cause
substantial infrastructural damage in the area." Some seismological
experts point out quakes historically has rocked the region every eight
decades, and the last one was just about 81 years ago. INDONESIA-
The undersea earthquakes that shook the islands of Andaman and Nicobar
in the last three days are due to a 'settling process' of the fault
plates and need not cause any major worries, say experts. Since April
this year, the islands have experienced nearly 17 earthquakes, with a
large number of them in June alone. The islands have been rattled by
nearly 13 earthquakes since Friday evening when a strong temblor
measuring 6.6, 120 km of Port Blair shook the already ravaged island,
which has been hit by earthquakes since the destructive tsunami crashed
into the Indian Coast on December 26, 2004. "These earthquakes are
quite common. A settling process is happening and energy is being
released from one plate, which is normal." The massive 9.1 magnitude
quake that caused the tsunami created a rupture in the Indian plate for
nearly 1,200 km. Inhabitants of the islands are used to a large number
of quakes. The islands have been hit by huge temblors ever since 1847
when a quake of magnitude 7.3 struck.

May 1: A strong
6.6-magnitude earthquake struck near the Aleutian Islands in
southwestern Alaska. It happened on a chain of more than 300 small
volcanic islands. May 2: Nevada - researchers say they HAVE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING QUITE LIKE THE "MOGUL EARTHQUAKE SEQUENCE," as
they have named it. "We don't know what is going to happen next." But a
swarm like this "makes you perk up your ears and start considering the
possibility that you might be in a heightened period of hazard." The
swarm of quakes has unnerved the roughly 3,000 residents who live
around Mogul, a sparse community of ranch homes located about two miles
west of Reno. More than 20 quakes of magnitude 2 or higher have hit on
some days, and the intensity and frequency of the quakes has been
increasing over time rather than following the normal pattern of
tailing off. The unusually intense swarm of earthquakes - more than
1,000 over the past two months - has struck directly beneath a small
suburb of Reno. May 7: Virginia - A
small 1.8 earthquake hit the Northern Virginia town of Annandale, which
is located in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Earthquakes rarely
strike on the US East Coast. A quake of similar magnitude hit the DC
area in 2003, while a 2.5-magnitude quake occurred in northern Virginia
in 1997. May 8: Tokyo -A strong 6.8
earthquake hit off the coast of Japan, waking up people 100 miles away
in Tokyo. Tokyo has not been hit by a major quake since 1923, when
140,000 people died in the Great Kanto Earthquake. May 15: China has warned the death toll from this week's powerful 7.9 magnitude earthquake
could soar to 50,000, while the government issued a rare public appeal
for rescue equipment as it struggled to cope with the disaster. More
than 12,300 remained buried and another 102,100 were injured in Sichuan
province, where the quake was centred, the vice governor told
reporters. Large areas of mountain surfaces around Yingxiu were bare,
apparently due to landslides triggered by the earthquake and the
aftershocks. In the town, it appeared that more than 90 percent of the
buildings had collapsed. "We felt continuous shaking for about two or
three minutes. All the people in our office are rushing downstairs.
We're still feeling slight tremblings," said an office worker
in Chengdu. The quake was the deadliest since one in 1976 in the city
of Tangshan near Beijing that killed 240,000 — although some reports
say as many as 655,000 perished — the most devastating in modern
history. Sichuan, China5.5 Eastern Sichuan, China5.1 Eastern Sichuan,

A 5.9 earthquake has killed at least six people in central Colombia,
causing landslides and shaking buildings. Its epicenter was located
about 55km (34 miles) from the capital Bogota, near the town of
Villavicencio. Bogota residents ran outside fearing buildings would
fall, and then stood around dazed in the rain. The victims are reported
to have been killed when rocks from a landslide hit the cars they were
travelling in. China - The death
toll from the massive7.9 earthquake in south-west China rose again,
55,239 people are now known to have died in the 12 May quake. 24,949
people remain missing and 281,006 were injured. More than 5.47 million
people are homeless and more than five million buildings have
collapsed. Concern is growing over a number of new lakes formed by the
force of the earthquake. Thirty-four lakes were created in the province
when landslides blocked rivers. Eight hold more than 3 million cubic
meters of water and one lake, less than 3km (two miles) from Beichuan
town, has doubled in size in four days.

Guatemala. TEXAS- A minor earthquake struck two counties close to San Antonio, Texas on Monday, receiving a 3.7 on the Richter Scale. TENNESSEE -
In less than 24 hours, a swarm of 28 small earthquakes was recorded
near Ridgely, Tennessee, a city 109 miles southeast of Cape Girardeau.
Ridgely is at "a junction of two major faults in the New Madrid seismic
zone." Multiple earthquakes are common near Ridgely, but are limited to
four or five events. Every 20 years or so, a big swarm, such as the one
that started Saturday, occurs. It is not clear if the weight of water
from recent rains caused the quakes, but scientists are studying the
possibilities. "Certainly the occurrence of earthquakes is controlled
by the amount of overburden — how much weight is above it." But swarms
have occurred in both wet and dry weather. The Ridgely quakes occurred
about four miles under the ground's surface. According to the U.S.
Geological Survey, the central Mississippi Valley is the most
earthquake-prone region of the United States east of the Rocky
Mountains. Scientists who follow the small Midwestern quakes linked to
the New Madrid fault think in terms of a great quake as a magnitude 8
or greater, which would devastate multiple states. "We have to plan for
the worst-case scenarios, but it doesn't do a whole lot of good to
scare the public with 8.4 when we're not ready for a magnitude 6." The
28 quakes over the weekend weren't felt by most people. OREGON-
Scientists listening to underwater microphones have detected an UNUSUAL
SWARM of earthquakes off central Oregon, something that often happens
before a volcanic eruption — except there are no volcanoes in the area.
Scientists don't know exactly what the earthquakes mean, but they could
be the result of molten rock rumbling away from the recognized
earthquake faults off Oregon. There have been more than 600 quakes over
the past 10 days in a basin 150 miles southwest of Newport. The biggest
was magnitude 5.4, and two others were more than magnitude 5.0. On the
hydrophones, the quakes sound like low thunder and are UNLIKE ANYTHING
SCIENTISTS HAVE HEARD IN 17 YEARS OF LISTENING. Some of the quakes have
also been detected by earthquake instruments on land. The hydrophones
are left over from a network the Navy used to listen for submarines
during the Cold War. They routinely detect passing ships, earthquakes
on the ocean bottom and whales calling to one another. Scientists hope
to send out an OSU research ship to take water samples, looking for
evidence that sediment has been stirred up and chemicals that would
indicate magma is moving up through the Juan de Fuca Plate. The Juan de
Fuca Plate is a small piece of crust being crushed between the Pacific
Plate and North America. The quakes HAVE NOT FOLLOWED THE TYPICAL
PATTERN of a major shock followed by a series of diminishing
aftershocks, and few have been strong enough to be felt on shore. 5.0

centered 127 miles east of St. Louis, Missouri. It shook southern
Illinois at 4:36 a.m. (5:36 a.m. ET). There were no immediate reports
of damage. People as far north as Chicago and as far west as St. Louis
reported feeling the quake. More than a dozen aftershocks have been
recorded in the wake of Friday's early morning quake that measured 5.2
on the Richter scale but only two were strong, including one early
Monday morning. This morning's quake, recorded at 12:38 a.m., measured
4.5 on the Richter scale, the second strongest aftershock from this
weekend's activity. Another Friday morning quake, at about 10:14 a.m.,
measured 4.6. The U.S. Geological Survey says there have been 22
aftershocks since the initial quake. Friday morning's quake shook a
wide area of the American Midwest and caused minor damage. Earthquake
tremors were felt up to 450 miles northwest of the epicenter, in
Chicago, Milwaukee and Des Moines, Iowa. April 28- In just 16 hours, 35 earthquakes from 1.9 to 4.7 magnitude rocked the Reno, Nevada area. April 29- California
- A magnitude 5.2 earthquake shook a rural part of northern California
on Tuesday evening. The moderate quake hit shortly after 8 p.m. (11
p.m. ET) about 11 miles east-southeast of Willow Creek, which is about
190 miles northwest of Sacramento. Officials had received no reports of
injuries or damage. ‘Sonic boom’ preceded the 5.2 quake
- The United States Geological Survey termed it a level VI temblor with
a strong shake and light damage. A magnitude-2.0 aftershock hit five
minutes later, 16 miles to the east of Willow Creek. “It was sort of
like a sonic boom. It was a very loud noise before the house started
shaking. It was pretty scary, the biggest thing I’ve ever felt here.
(It) lasted 10 seconds max. I didn’t feel the aftershock.” “We felt it
good. It was a short one with a heavy shake. We’ve got a free-floating
ceiling fan and it was rocking and rolling.” “Everyone had time to go
outside and come back and the glass shelf was still shaking. It was a
hard jolt, but things kept swaying for a couple minutes afterwards. We
had a few things fall off the shelf. Nothing major. It wasn’t as bad as
the big one in Ferndale a few years ago. That knocked me off my feet.”
“I’ve felt earthquakes before, but NEVER HEARD THAT LOUD OF A NOISE
BEFORE.”

there has been a 6.4 quake in the KURIL ISLANDS and a 6.1 quake in the
KEP. MENTAWAI REGION, INDONESIA. This afternoon there have been several
large quakes in the Philippines- The largest was an earthquake of 6.9
magnitude at 10:11 pm which rocked the Bicol region southeast of
Manila. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage. The
quake was felt in Legazpi city in Albay province, site of the restive
Mayon volcano, and southern Leyte province. A 5.8 magnitude earthquake
struck Batanes at 9:49 pm. There have been two quakes off the coast of
Oregon - 4.9 & 5.1. March 4: PHILIPPINES-
Officials closed schools in the Bicol region southeast of Manila on
Tuesday as a series of aftershocks to a powerful earthquake and heavy
rains increased the risk of landslides in the area. A 6.9 magnitude
earthquake rocked Legazpi city in Albay province, site of the Mayon
volcano, and southern Leyte province on Monday night. Some 126 villages
in Albay province alone are considered highly vulnerable to landslides.

2002. The 7.2-magnitude quake hit about 140 miles southeast of the city
of Hotan in sparsely populated southwest Xinjiang province. Four quakes
Friday morning initially rocked the Kunlun Mountain region. A
subsequent fifth quake was detected in Yutian County in southwest
China's Xinjiang Uygur region. March 20: CALIFORNIA-
A swarm of nearly 20 minor earthquakes struck near Dublin on Thursday
along a small fault near the Calaveras fault. The first quake, of a 2.9
magnitude, hit two miles west of Dublin at 4:18 p.m. Sixteen smaller
earthquakes followed at two- to 15-minute intervals. There were no
reports of injuries of damage. The last earthquake struck at 7:38 p.m.,
two miles west southwest of Dublin at a magnitude 1.6. The largest of
the temblors was a 3.2 magnitude that hit at 6:28 p.m. "It's real
common. You can have up to a dozen little earthquakes a day." Mar 21, 7.2-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes China:
BEIJING — A major earthquake struck a sparsely populated region of
western China early Friday. Some houses collapsed, but there were no
injuries, state media reported. The 7.2-magnitude quake hit about 140
miles southeast of the city of Hotan in southwest Xinjiang province,
according to the U.S. Geological Survey. A spokesman for China's
Earthquake Administration said it was a 7.3 magnitude quake. There were
no reports of injuries, he said, and the area is sparsely populated.
There were four aftershocks in the region, ranging from 5.0 to 5.2
magnitudes, according to a notice on the Web site of the
administration. March 29: A 6.1-magnitude quake has hit northern Chile close to the border with Bolivia, the US Geological Survey reports.

people remain trapped under rubble in Rwanda after a series of
earthquakes hit in Africa's Great Lakes region. At least 40 were killed
in Rwanda and neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo after Sunday's
quakes. The two most powerful occurred hours apart in the Democratic
Republic of Congo and neighboring Rwanda, with magnitudes of 6.0 and
5.0 respectively. More than 300 people were injured by the powerful
earthquakes. The quakes were also felt in neighboring Burundi,
disrupting hydroelectric power and causing a half-hour electricity cut.CHILE- Earthquake-prone Chile was
rocked again by another tremor on Monday. The temblor, which was
measured at 6.3 on the Richter scale, did not cause any damage or
casualties. It was felt in northern Chile and the southern part of
Peru. Magnitude 6.9 Earthquake hits Northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge on
Friday, February 08. CALIFORNIA- A
string of earthquakes along the U.S. - Mexico border over the past few
days is rattling nerves. The latest quake hit Monday morning, near
Mexicali. Officials said the magnitude 4.9 - downgraded from 5.1 -
earthquake struck at 10:29 a.m. The quake was centered 24 miles
south-southeast of Calexico and was felt in parts of San Diego,
Imperial and Orange counties and as far away as Yuma, Arizona. Late
Friday, that same area was hit by a 5.4 earthquake, which shut down
factories near the border and left 400,000 people without power. The
recent quakes are actually a swarm or collection of quakes that hit
roughly around the same time in the same area. Normally, you have a big
quake, followed by smaller aftershocks. But a swarm is different. The
big quake is not at the beginning of the series and it's not always
that much bigger than the other quakes. Monday's quake was followed by
a series of aftershocks, including one that measured a 3.6 magnitude.
Earthquakes are typical for this area near the border, which is
basically the southern extension of the San Andreas Fault. "South of
the Salton Sea, the San Andreas tends to develop complex faults - many
smaller faults - in several directions. It's most likely related to
this system." Swarms tend to range from 2 to 5 magnitudes and tend to
repeat. LEBANON- A moderate 4.0
earthquake shook southern Lebanon overnight causing no damage but
sending many panicked residents into the streets in the coastal town of
Tyre. The last earthquake of such magnitude to shake the country took
place in 2001 with its epicenter in the Bekaa region of eastern
Lebanon. The Geophysical Institute of Israel measured the tremor at 4.1
and said it was also felt in northern Israel, across the border from
Lebanon. Seismology experts in Israel warn of a major earthquake within
years because of a major fault line in the region. There have been many
small aftershocks. 6.1 Antofagasta, Chile5.0 Solomon Islands 5.0

in the California-Mexico border region following the latest jolt in an
earthquake swarm that's been going on for nearly two weeks. The biggest
one so far today measured 5.0 by the U.S. Geological Survey and 5.3 in
a seismic network operated by Mexico. It struck at 2:41 local time
about 20 miles southeast of the U.S. border city of Calexico. There are
no reports of any injuries or damage on the U.S. side. It was the
fourth moderate quake since the swarm began on February 8th. Feb. 20: A magnitude-7.5 earthquake struck west of Sumatra Island in Indonesia, killing at least three people. Feb.21:
A large earthquake 6.0 occurred in Nevada, USA. The epicenter was
located at Independence Valley fault system which only rarely produces
earthquakes. Las Vegas, the gambling capital of the world, has not
reported any damage; however, reports estimate that over 2 million
people in Nevada, Utah, Southern California and Idaho felt the
earthquake. So far no injuries have been reported as a result of the
Nevada earthquake. OSLO, Norway An earthquake with a
preliminary magnitude of 6.2 has struck Arctic waters off Norway's
Svalbard islands. Senior researcher Conrad Lindholm of the national
seismic monitoring center says it is the most powerful earthquake since
Norway started keeping records about a century ago. A magnitude 4.8 quake was felt in the Yuma area
at 12:31 p.m. Friday, followed minutes later by a magnitude 4.4
aftershock. This swarm of quakes began Feb. 9 when an earthquake
measuring 5.5 was felt in Yuma. That quake has been followed by
numerous aftershocks, some striking twice in one day. Aftershock quakes
have so far measured from magnitude 2.1 to 4.7. Experts with USGS said
the Friday quake was likely just another aftershock related to the
recent BAJA CALIFORNIA SWARM over the past several weeks. Quakes
measuring 2.9 and 4.1 followed within minutes of Friday's initial
temblor. A 4.7 quake in the same region was felt on Wednesday. Recent
quakes have originated south of Mexicali, Baja California. LONDON
- Britain's strongest earthquake in nearly 25 years woke up people
across the country Wednesday morning, officials said. The earthquake
measuring 4.7 on the Richter Scale, according to the US Geological
Survey, struck at 0100 GMT with the epicenter 48 kilometers south of
Hull, east Yorkshire, 205 kilometers north of London.

that occurred Thursday as of 17:12 hours were perceptible in zones of
Santiago de Cuba and Granma provinces. The magnitude of the movements
generated in the Oriente fault, the country's main seism-generating
zone, ranged between 3.4 degrees and four degrees in the Richter
scale. JAKARTA - A strong 6.6-magnitude earthquake
rocked the eastern Indonesian province of Maluku, prompting the issuing
of a tsunami alert.
