Luke 21:  [25] And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; [26] Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. [27] And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. [28] And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.

More aftershocks are expected in comingdays after a series of powerful earthquakes triggered a tsunami alertfor much of the South Pacific, including Australia's northeast coast. The latest tremors caused panic on many of the region's remote islandsjust days after 184 people were killed when giant waves, whipped up byanother earthquake, smashed into Samoa and neighboring islands. Atsunami warning which has since been canceled was issued for some 25countries and territories stretching as far as Australia, New Zealandand Indonesia. The first of three earthquakes struck about 500 kmnorthwest of Vanuatu at 9.03am,prompting thousands of people on remoteislands to flee to higher ground. The large "potentially tsunamigenic"magnitude 7.9 earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 38 km below theseabed and was followed by a series of strong aftershocks. The twolargest aftershocks were recorded at magnitudes of7.4 and 6.8,occurring at 9.19am and 10.13am respectively. However, the quakesproduced only a small tsunami, with waves of just three to 10centimeters recorded. Experts said serious damage was unlikely as theclosest areas of significant population were outside the range ofimpact. "Following this size earthquake we would expect to see a numberof aftershocks in the coming days, and possibly weeks, graduallyreducing in size and frequency." The Vanuatu Tourism Office said therewas some minor structural damage on the island of Espiritu Santo but noreports of fatalities or injuries.  The latest earthquakes followthose that impacted on the Samoa region and Indonesia last week. A7.6-magnitude quake off the western coast of Sumatra killed more than1000 people and left half a million homeless. It is REMARKABLE to haveso many large earthquakes over such a short space of time, butscientists say that while they were related as part of the Earth'songoing dynamic processes, there was no direct connection."Thisearthquake occurred where the Australian plate slides beneath thePacific Plate and releases stress which builds up due to thisprocess.Earthquakes will continue to occur at the boundaries of theAustralian Plate as it pushes slowly northeast at approximately sevencentimeters per year, resulting in collisions with the Pacific,Eurasian and Philippine plates."

New Mexico -  Socorro has beenjiggling for more than 10 days with a swarm ofearthquakes, seismologists said on Monday, Aug. 31. "People are feelingthem andhearing them." The first was felt Aug. 19. No damage has beenreported. All of the quakes had magnitudes less than 3. The quakes havebeencentered in an area several miles north and east of Socorro.Socorro sits atopa large body of molten magma more than 10 miles belowEarth's surface. As aresult, the region sees almost half of NewMexico's significant earthquakes. While quake swarms in the area arecommon, this is THE LARGEST IN THE PASTDECADE. The area's largestrecorded earthquake was an estimated 6.5 magnitudein 1906, which causedsignificant damage. While Socorro is the epicenter of NewMexico'searthquake activity, quakes have been felt up and down the RioGranderift, an area where Earth's crust is slowly spreading apart, andsometimescreating earthquakes in the process. The latest swarm is nocause for alarm, because previous swarms have never led to major quakes.

India - Panic hasgripped people in the northeast with four earthquakes rockingthe regionin the past three weeks, including a 5.9 magnitude tremor Friday, theBIGGEST IN THE PAST NINE YEARS. "Everyone is asking the samequestion, are we prepared to deal with a major disaster? We have notseen any urgency onthe part of the government to activate its disastermanagement cells." Anearthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter Scale tookplace Monday, while anotherof 4.9 magnitude was experienced Aug 19, anda tremor of 5.6 intensity shookthe region Aug 11. "A major earthquakein the region is due any time. Weare saying this on the basis ofstudies, although earthquakes cannot bepredicted as such." All the fourtremors shook houses and other structuresin Assam, Nagaland, Manipurand Tripura, besides being felt in Myanmar as well."Obviously we areworried and there is a general sense of panic amongpeople in the entireregion." The seven northeastern states, Assam,Meghalaya, Mizoram,Tripura, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur, areconsidered byseismologists as the sixth major earthquake prone belt in theworld.

Indonesia- Peopleliving in Cilacap, Central Java, prefer to camp out in theirbackyardsrather than sleep inside their homes, following two major earthquakesinthe past week. They remain haunted by last week’s 7.3-magnitudequake,centered in the waters off Tasikmalaya, and Monday’s6.8-magnitude tremor, located in the waters off Yogyakarta.

A 6.0 earthquake that shook Tolitoliregency, Central Sulawesi onWednesday has left cracks in the regency’sairport. "There were cracks ina number of rooms including the departurewaiting and VIP rooms and the restroom." A local public figure said hewas worried that another earthquakecould destroy the airport complex.

A strong earthquake has struck offthe coast of Venezuela, knocking outpower in the capital and sendingpeople rushing into the streets. The6.4-magnitude quake's epicentre was65 miles (110km) west of Caracas, at adepth of 6.2 miles (10km).Buildings were damaged and at least seven peoplewere injured in thenorth-western Falcon state, the worst hit.

Notable Earthquake Activity:   MEXICO's -Gulfof California has been hit by a 6.9-magnitude earthquake and at leastthree smaller tremors. There have been no reports of injuries ordamage. There was a risk of a small, localized tsunami in the area, officials and experts warned, but no threat to America's Pacific coast. The tremors were all centered under the bed of the Gulf of California,a narrow strip of sea between Baja California peninsula and the Mexicanmainland. The mountains and deserts of the peninsula are sparselypopulated, minimizing the risk of widespread damage or injuries. "Theearth was turning around really ugly. People got really scared." OKLAHOMA-An earthquake swarm that struck Jones on Thursday and Friday puzzled astate geologist. Not necessarily because of the number of quakes, butbecause of where they occurred. "They’re not in areas that we never hadevents before, but it’s a little UNUSUAL to have them out there.” Jonesis about 20 miles east of the nearest fault zone, the Nemaha zone. Thezone is about 400 miles long, extending from southeastern Nebraska tocentral Oklahoma. The swarm included eight quakes during a 14 1/2 hourspan. Seven of the quakes registered magnitudes in the 2.3 to 2.7range. The most powerful quake registered 3.7 on the Richter scale. A3.4 magnitude quake also struck Seminole County on Thursday, about 15miles northeast of Ada. "We don’t necessarily have any record of theseleading up to some big event. It strangely enough seems to have quieteddown, so I wouldn’t jump to any conclusions just yet.” An earthquakeswarm last occurred in Oklahoma on Oct. 21, 2008, when nine smallquakes were reported in southeast Oklahoma County and southwest LincolnCounty. On Feb. 12, 2007, four small earthquakes were reported threemiles northwest of Moore.

Significant Earthquake Activity:   TEXAS-A 2.8 magnitude earthquake hit southern Cleburne at 3:06 Tuesdayafternoon. The quake was centered about one mile west of the city. It'sthe fourth time in the last few weeks that a quake has struck NorthTexas. TEXAS-A massive crack in the earth opened up last week in Claude, Texas andit's creating a stir among geologists. Geologists said Tuesday thecrack was a joint in the earth's crust. They believe the opening is theresult of a weak point in the joint where one spot slips away from theother. Some parts measure more than 30-feet deep and it drained whatused to be a pond. Experts say earth cracks are common but the size ofthe crack in Claude is not. TEXAS-Residents of a town in north-central Texas have reported hearing a clapof thunder that turned out to be an earthquake rather than stormyweather. The U.S. Geological Survey says the tremor at 8:02 a.m. Mondayregistered 2.3-magnitude and was centered about 1 mile west ofCleburne. After the sound of a thunder clap, residents reported hearinga low rumble for about two seconds. No damage nor injuries werereported in the community south of Fort Worth. The tremor comes a dayafter a 2.6-magnitude tremor was reported late Sunday about 4 mileseast of Cleburne. A 2.8-magnitude quake hit Cleburne last Tuesday. BRITAIN- An earthquake that shook South Wales was the BIGGEST TO HIT THEREGION IN MORE THAN THREE DECADES. A tremor measuring 3.0 on theRichter scale shook houses and made lights flicker in the Bridgendarea, prompting a flood of calls to the police. The epicenter of thequake, which happened shortly before 9pm on Friday has been identifiedby experts as Nantyffyllon, near Maesteg in Bridgend County. Some ofthe reports made by residents included, “the whole house creaked and itfelt like it moved” and “the experience felt like a car had collidedwith the house”. Although the nearest boundary in the earth’s crust, ortectonic plates, is the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, quakes still occur whenstresses within the tectonic plates are relieved by movement on faultplanes.

'It was UNUSUAL because it wasquite a violent bang, like an explosion, and did not feel like arumbling earthquake at all.' The British Geological Survey said: 'Itwas a significant size and appears to have centered on the town ofUlverston. We've had reports from people and from the calls we've hadit was quite widely felt across the region. It could end up being oneof the largest earthquakes of the year.' SIGNIFICANT EARTHQUAKE ACTIVITY:   3/1/09-OREGON-Deep quake in SW was a RARE one. A light earthquake deep under themountains of southwestern Oregon, but a geologist said it was aneye-opener. The quake was about 24 miles deep and arose from a plate ofbasalt under the Pacific Ocean sliding beneath the North Americancontinent. For years, scientists doubted that such deep quakes happenedunder Oregon. The quake was light, at magnitude 4.1. But it's a signthat one of magnitude 6 or 7 could arise from that slab, known as theJuan de Fuca plate. The plate is the source of many earthquakes ofgreater magnitude in the Puget Sound area, but it is under greaterstress there. Scientists say it’s the ONLY ONE OF ITS KIND TO HIT WITHIN MILES OF THE REGION SINCE 1833.

INDONESIA -A series of powerful earthquakes at dawn killed at least three peoplein remote eastern Indonesia, cutting power lines and badly damagingbuildings. The first 7.6-magnitude quake struck at 4:43 am (Saturday1/3/09), and was followed almost three hours later by a 7.5 magnitudeaftershock. AFGHANISTAN-a strong earthquake hit northeastern Afghanistan, a quake that rattledthe capital Kabul for about a minute. The quake had a preliminarymagnitude of 6.2. 1/24/09- ARKANSAS -Scientists Warn of Huge Quake - US scientists warn a newly discoveredfault in Arkansas could trigger a magnitude seven earthquake. Thepreviously unknown fault is at least seven miles long and its epicenteris near a major natural gas pipeline. The fault, which lies west ofMarianna, is around 5,000 years old and will likely have caused atleast one big tremor in its history. Little Rock, the capital ofArkansas, would be at risk if there was a powerful quake despite being100 miles southwest of the line. Neighboring states Tennessee andMississippi could also be hit. 1/08/09-YELLOWSTONE - stillshakes one week after first tremor. The small earthquakes that began inthe park a week ago continue. They include three more earthquakesFriday (1/2/09) that measured stronger than magnitude 3.0. A quake ofmagnitude 3.5 happened at 11:30 a.m., followed by quakes measuring 3.2and 3.1 at 12:40 p.m. and 1:15 p.m. Several hundred quakes centeredunder the north end of Yellowstone Lake have now occurred since lastFriday. The strongest so far was a magnitude 3.9 quake last Saturday(1/3/09). The USGS discounted chances for cataclysmic eruption of the caldera, notingthat the hot, active magma chamber below Yellowstone has turned into"largely crystallized mush." But the same study also said: "Dependingon the nature and magnitude of a particular hazardous event and theparticular time and season when it might occur, 70,000 to more than100,000 persons could be affected; the most violent events could affecta broader region or even continent-wide areas." A supervolcano eventdoes not appear to be imminent. "We don't think the amount of magmaexists that would create one of these large eruptions of the past...wewould expect to see more and larger quakes, deformation and precursoryexplosions out of the lake. We don't believe that anything strange ishappening right now." 1/10/09 YELLOWSTONEIsYellowstone's 'super volcano' about to blow up? The super volcano inYellowstone Park, which includes parts of the states of Wyoming, Idahoand Montana, is making its presence felt. On New Year's Day, thesituation was so alarming that geologists called for an immediateevacuation of an area within a radius of 325 kilometers around thenational park. At a rate of four tremors per hour, an eruption appearedimminent. The tremors have subsided slightly since 1 January, but itwould appear the beast is slowly coming awake. The volcano's caldera, which accounts for much of the park's terrain, measures about 40 by 60kilometers. About 10 kilometers beneath the surface, a giant reservoiris slowly filling up with magma. Through cracks and fissures, some ofits heat rises to the surface in the form of steam and gas, creatingthe geysers the park is so famous for. Since a few days ago, it hasbecome abundantly clear this volcano is no longer dormant. "Yellowstonesits atop a reservoir filled with a highly viscous sort of magma, whichcannot simply flow away through cracks, which means that the gasesproduced by the magma cannot escape and the pressure keeps building. Also, the magma wants to rise up; after all, the gases it containsreduce its specific gravity, and at some point in time the layers ofrock on top the reservoir will simply be blown away in a giganticexplosion." In the week prior to 28 December, the number of tremors inthe area steadily increased to a maximum of 103 a day. In the weekafter, the number was still 10 a day. Park rangers and visitors couldfeel the tremors for miles around. Similar series of tremors have beenregistered before. In 1985, and also in 2004, the tremors came so hardand so fast, they were nearly impossible to count, and the ground inthe park was so hot, that it melted the soles on people's shoes. Threethousand moose did not live to tell the tale. But the tremorseventually subsided. The next major alert was raised in 2007: thebottom of the volcano's bowl-shaped caldera was rising by sevencentimeters a year, clear evidence of mounting pressure in the magmachamber underneath. 1/13/09 YELLOWSTONE-A new series of what are described as a "modest swarm of earthquakes"began Friday in Yellowstone National Park, about 10 miles northeast ofthe north end of Yellowstone Lake, where a swarm of approximately 900quakes had occurred between Dec. 26 and Thursday. The current swarm islocated on the northeast corner of the Yellowstone Caldera. The newswarm, so far, is considerably smaller than the first series. Themigration of the quakes continues in a north-northeast direction. Thelargest of the new swarm of quakes was a magnitude 3.3 recorded at11:17 a.m. Friday. The observatory is checking for any changes to thethermal areas located near the epicenters. Of the earlier swarm, 500have been reviewed by seismologists; 111 of those earthquakes had amagnitude of greater than 2.0, and 18 earthquakes were greater than3.0. The swarm of tremors is the largest series of back-to-back quakesto hit the area in years. The last prior major earthquake swarm was in1985 and lasted three months. The Yellowstone Volcano Observatoryclosely monitored the swarm. It recorded some 900 minor quakes nearFishing Bridge between Dec. 26 and Jan. 8. According to an observatoryrelease, the combined energy level of all 900 tremors would equal asingle 4.5 magnitude quake. 1/16/09 - WYOMING -Geologists of Jackson Hole issue press release on Alpine quake - Anearthquake was felt at 9:15 pm on Thursday, January 15th in Jackson,Alpine, Etna and Thayne, Wyoming, and Idaho Falls, Idaho. It was amagnitude 4.0 event located just north of Alpine Junction at a depth of3 miles. This earthquake occurred at the south end of the extendedTeton Fault zone along the eastern base of the Teton Mountain Range.Geologists call this area the “Seismic Gap” because of the lack ofrecorded earthquakes — a linear area along the large Teton Fault, whichis UNUSUALLY SEISMICALLY QUIET. The recent swarm of hundreds ofearthquakes in Yellowstone National Park lies near the northern end ofthis “seismic gap”. This seemingly quiet seismic zone centered alongthe Teton Fault has been the site of magnitude 7 plus earthquakes inpre-historic times. The Faults have created the Grand Teton Mountainsand shaped western Wyoming. Another magnitude 7 plus earthquake willfill this gap sometime within the next several hundred years. Someearthquakes are preceded by a perceptible increase in seismicity at oneor both ends of the “seismic gap”.
