December - Volcanoes 2005:
A 40 acre section on coast has fallen into the sea at Kilauea volcano
in Hawaii. Explosions caused by lava entering the sea at the collapse
site, sent fragments up to 500 m inland. This is the largest collapse
at Kilauea volcano since the current eruption began in 1983. Ambae
volcano in Vanuatu erupted on 27th November. Up to 5000 people in 15
villages have been affected. A new island was formed in one of the
summit crater lakes (Vui). Further eruptions through the crater lake
could prove dangerous. Food crops have been covered in ash.Eruptions
continue at Lopevi volcano in Vanuatu. Satellite images show hotspots.
There are no reports of ash emissions. Currently four volcanoes are
erupting in Vanuatu. The eruption of
Karthala Volcano in Comoros has affected up to 250,000 people in 76
villages. Approximately 175,000 people have inadequate access to clean
drinking water due to the contamination of rain water. Many people have
been suffering the effects of inhaling volcanic dust. Karthala Volcano
has been erupting since 24th November, with volcanic fallout covering
large areas of Grande Comore Island, including the capital Moroni.
Seismic activity remains high at the volcano and a lava lake has formed
in the crater. The eruption of Ambae
Volcano in Vanuatu continues to cause problems for residents. Fears of
further eruptions under Lake Vui have required evacuation of 5000 people
from a 10 km danger zone to safer areas on the island. Volcanic
activity is increasing, and ash emissions are occurring every 3 to 5
minutes. Emissions can be seen from neighboring islands of Maewo and
Pentecost. Measurements of gas emissions at the volcano indicate large
amounts comparable to Yasur volcano in southern of Vanuatu. Acid rain
may become a problem. Pentecost and Maewo remain the priority islands
to settle the resident in the case of a mass evacuation. An
earthquake swarm occurred at Loihi, Hawaii volcano on December 6-7. The
swarm produced 16 earthquakes with magnitudes 3 to 4.7.
November - Volcanoes 2005: Piton
de la Fournaise Volcano (Reunion): A seismic crisis occurred at Piton
de la Fournaise volcano today at 0600 hr (local time). This was
followed by opening of a fissure on the north flank at 2370 m
elevation. The fissure stopped emitting lava at 0930 hr. Taal
Volcano (Philippines): Taal Volcano has been raised to level 1 alert,
after a series of volcanic earthquakes. People are forbidden to enter
the main crater due to the possibility of explosion, and poisonous gas
emissions. Karthala Volcano
(Comoros): A lava lake has formed in the summit crater at Karthala
volcano. Contamination of tank water supplies by volcanic fallout may
have affected up to 118,000 people in 75 villages. Agriculture and
livestock may also be affected by the eruption.
October - Volcanoes 2005: There
has been a slight swelling, or uplift, of the ground surface over a
broad area of central Oregon, centered five kilometers, or three miles,
west of the South Sister volcano in Three Sisters region of the Oregon
Cascade Range, according to scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey.
The Three Sisters region is located 35 kilometers (22 miles) west of
Bend, Ore., and 100 kilometers (60 miles) east of Eugene. The uplift,
which scientists say occurred between 1996 and 2000, covers an area
about 15 to 20 kilometers (9 to 12 miles) in diameter. The maximum
amount of uplift at its center is about 10 centimeters (4 inches). It
is too broad and low to be noticed from the ground, and several close
aerial inspections of the area have revealed no unusual surface
features. A volcano in western El Salvador
erupted on Saturday, sending a column of ash 50,000 feet into the air
and killing two farmers buried by chunks of earth and boiling water
that tumbled down the slopes. Authorities ordered the evacuation of
three communities in the shadow of the Ilamatepec volcano, which towers
near Santa Ana, the country's second largest city, 40 miles from San
Salvador, the capital. An
explosion shook a volcano in western Mexico Monday, sending a plume of
ash and smoke 3 miles into the air and scattering hot rocks on its
slopes. The Colima Volcano also shot rock fragments and burning gas
down its slopes. The May 30, 2005 blast was the largest eruption in at
least 15 years at Mexico's most active volcano, said Carmen Segura
Rangel, coordinator of civil defense for Mexico's Interior Department.
